What it means to be an A.B.A.T.E. of PA Member by Kevin Snyder
Occasionally some confusion arises about the rights, benefits and responsibilities that go along with being a member of A.B.A.T.E. of PA.
First the basics. Under the Corporate Operating Procedures (COP's), every member is entitled to the following:
- A subscription to the state newsletter.
- A state patch for the first year of membership and an appropriate year pin thereafter.
- A $100 tuition reimbursement for any member who becomes an instructor in the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety program.
Additionally, membership also has the following benefits in addition to those required by the COP's:
- A window sticker for your vehicle to indicate that you are a proud A.B.A.T.E. of PA member. This comes with your membership card.
- Automatic inclusion in the state's accidental death & dismemberment insurance policy. The estate of any member who passes away due to accidental death is entitled to $3,000 death benefit.
- Eligibility to win the Senator Clarence D. Bell Memorial Scholarship. Each year two $500 scholarships are awarded to deserving ABATE members.
- If you ask, you're probably eligible for a discount on your motorcycle insurance if you belong to ABATE of PA.
All in all, not bad for thirty bucks for single and fifty bucks for a couple membership. But its the tip of the iceberg.
By being a member of ABATE of PA, you are part of the only voice for motorcyclists in Harrisburg.
Have you . . . - Chosen whether a helmet is appropriate riding gear?
- Taken the PA motorcycle Safety course at no charge?
- Ridden on the Turnpike and taken advantage of the reduced fare for motorcycles?
- Seen the PennDOT signs promoting motorcycle safety and awareness?
- Taken your child for their first ride on your motorcycle?
- Put a set of tall handlebars on your bike?
- Added extra lighting (engine lights) to your motorcycle?
- Gotten a ticket on your bike but didn't have to pay the CAT fund surcharge?
All of these things and more are possible because of ABATE of PA. By being a member you are part of the most effective grass-roots political effort in Pennsylvania. Your voice is heard in Harrisburg.
You get the benefit of a coordinated statewide effort to protect the rights of the motorcycling community. It doesn't matter what you ride or even if you ride or not. All you have to do is believe that motorcyclists have rights and need to be protected.
There are responsibilities that come with membership as well as these things of all our members . . .
- Respect your brothers and sisters in the motorcycling community. We are a diverse bunch and sometimes diversity leads to disagreement. At the end of the day, we all share the same wind, and when our rights are taken away, we all lose them.
- Be an ambassador to the community. ABATE of PA's membership represents about one percent of the total motorcycling community in Pennsylvania. As a member you are part of the one percent who cares enough to make a difference. You are visible. Make it count.
Being an ABATE of PA member is both a bargain, and a burden. But if you care about motorcyclists' rights and you live in Pennsylvania, belonging to ABATE of PA is the only way to protect those rights.
If your already a member, you know what I'm talking about, and you have my thanks.
If your not, you need to look at the things that are important to you as a motorcyclist and decide if they are worth keeping. For a little more than the price of a tank of gas for your bike, you can take the first step towards keeping them. Or you can continue to be part of the ninety nine percent who lets the one percent do the work for them.
The choice is yours
